MCC baseball walks off with win
ROCHESTER - Frank Poerio (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton) drove in the winning run with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give MCC a 14-13 victory over Finger Lakes CC in college baseball Thursday.
The hit capped a back-and-forth affair that saw Monroe (3-12) take an early 5-1 lead only to watch the Lakers score six runs in the fifth.
Vinny Bomasuto (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) led off the bottom of the ninth with a double for his fourth hit of the game. After Spencer Scorza (Penfield, NY/Penfield) moved Bomasuto over with a ground ball, Poerio ended things with the game-winning hit.
Cody Petre (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) got the win in relief, tossing a scoreless top of the ninth.
After staking FLCC to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, MCC got three back in the bottom. Bomasuto drove in two with a single, and Scorza followed with an RBI hit of his own.
The Tribunes added two in the fourth before the Lakers put up six runs and six hits in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. After a run by Monroe made it 7-6, FLCC added three more in the top of the sixth 10 make it 10-6.
MCC got two back in the sixth, one by way of a Ralph Alloco (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) home run. The see-saw game continued as Finger Lakes scored two in the seventh to make it 12-8.
Monroe then came through with its biggest inning, scoring five in the bottom of the seventh to reclaim the lead, 13-12. Scorza highlighted the inning with a bases-clearing double, and Bobby Frantz (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) added a two-run single.
FLCC tied it in the bottom of the eighth, setting up Poerio's late-game dramatics.
Bomasuto finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and Scorza added three hits and four runs driven in. Frantz, Alloco, and Danny Mendick (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) all added three hits apiece. MCC pounded out 19 hits on the game.
